Located 10,000 feet above sea level in Crested Butte, Colorado, the Bishop residence underwent Architectural Design, Site/Landscaping Design in association with Mundus Bishop Design, Interior Design and Kitchen and Millwork Design.

As a departure point in the design, we drew from structures which become part of the landscape rather than imposing themselves on it. These structures, often built for mining or utility, use natural or man-made materials that are simply detailed and harmonious with their surroundings. The form and material composition also respond to budget limitations and a desire for sustainability.

In order to minimize the disturbance of the high alpine environment (including nearby wetlands), we have elevated the majority of the house above the existing sloped grade. Not only does this minimize the repair of sensitive vegetation and allow existing drainage patters to remain, but it also provides views of the mountains to the north from both the living room and master bedroom.

The house is organized according to the natural slope of the site. The clients will most often enter through the garage into the utility room and move down through a series of cascading terraces that follow the natural grade. As one moves through the house, the walls and ceiling grow apart from each other, the spaces open up and culminate in a room which is 24 feet wide and 24 feet tall. While the house is only 2500 square feet, the telescoping spatial qualities provide a rich experience equal to the first visit to the site.
