This one-story
ranch house came to be after deep thoughts on the status of
'modern' architecture and its context into a 1960's brick
ranch dominated neighborhood. How do you keep the form modern,
while being a transitional stitch into a rapidly altered
subdivision? The materiality is a melding of brick to connect
with the past and a rework on the notions of a traditional
60's ranch. Organized to aid the client in their personal
lives while at the same time being open enough to entertain
easily, the floor plan was rigorously worked to flow naturally.
The rooms are arranged around a central courtyard bringing
light into the living room from the large clerestory windows
above and balancing the views to the gardens outside. Working
hand-in-hand with a landscape designer from the start of the
project has led to a complete collaboration on inside and
outside relationships.
