This 7000 square
foot house is a radical addition and renovation of an existing
structure on a pastoral site outside of Boulder, Colorado. Work
included the demolition and fundamental reworking of the existing
structure in both form and use. The new addition contains living
spaces, a master suite and display space for the couple's growing
contemporary art collection.
Situated on a pond with mature trees, the house is organized
around a series of stone walls that move in and out of the
construction and reaching out into the site. These walls form
enclosure and a place for bearing the considerable amount of
glass that frames views and brings daylight deep into the house.
Heavy timber finished like furniture, matched veneer cabinetry
and smooth white plaster walls contrasted against the stone
create a balance between the rural and refined. This idea is
also reflected in the landscape design where defined
architectural site elements are contrasted with the existing
landscape.
Cost withheld at the owner's request
Completion: December 2001.
