Pittsburg, PennsylvaniaWest End Pedestrian Bridge Design Competition
The West End Bridge is a historic structure. The integrity of that structure is defined by its original intended design and use. It's historic value, nor its aesthetic, should not be compromised by and addition to the original structure. The reclamation of the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela for recreation from industrial uses creates a sense of place and value to areas that should stand in contrast to an older industrial place and time. The crossing of the Ohio River at the West End Bridge should also reflect this new way of using the rivers, demonstrating the commitment to the human scale of the city. This new crossing gives the pedestrian the opportunity to view and participate in the scale and experience of the West End Bridge from unique vantage points below and adjacent to the old structure. Symbolically, the crossing should stand on its own and not be dependent of the older structure. A new bridge of the new century. The ability to design and construct a light, long crossing speaks to a highly evolved technology of today. This contrasts with the older industrial technology that influenced the structure of the West End Bridge 70 years ago. The juxtaposition of these structures represents an evolution of City culture and economy that has taken place in this new century. ArchitectureDenver received Honorable Mention. 2006
